The village of Kailua-Kona is a short drive from the condo. It's a center of activity for West Hawaii and was once the center of government for the Kingdom of Hawaii.
You'll find a wide variety of restaurants and shopping as well as several historical sites.
The village contains many historic buildings, including Hulihe'e Palace, Moku'aikaua Church, and St. Michael's Catholic Church.
Kailua-Kona was once one of many Hawaiian fishing villages on the leeward coast of the Big Island. About 200 years ago it became a political, social and commercial center after King Kamehameha I
chose Kailua to be his home. It was the capital of Hawaii for many years.
Many of these were the first structures built by the missionaries who came to Hawaii and had such an influence on its history.
Because Kailua was the royal residence it became one of the first places the missionaries landed and was a center for early missionary activity.
